Despite being a highly sensitive person who is very affected by strong smells, I loooooved the smell of dryer sheets blowing out of our home’s vents as a child. It brought me a sense of comfort to smell it. Can you relate?
I have to be honest, I was really bummed and disappointed when I learned the truths about dryer sheets and just how toxic they are for our health and for our environment. I lamented, “Did this mean I would no longer get to smell that nostalgic aroma?”
Sadly yes, that’s partly the reality. I would have to say goodbye to that cozy smell and HELLO to a friendlier, safer alternative!
The Truth About Dryer Sheets
Did you know that of all the chemicals we use around our homes in cleaners, detergents, and “freshening” agents, dryer sheets are considered to be one of the most toxic? Yep, that’s right. Downright dangerous.
The chemicals that make up dryer sheets are designed to cling to to fabrics and surfaces, which means that they enter your body through your skin. I want you to picture this. Would you eat chemcials you knew were in dryer sheets? Of course not! But allowing them to enter through your skin is doing the exact same thing!
The chemicals in dryer sheets directly affect your nervous system and your endocrine system which can ultimately lead to chronic illness and disease.
You might be thinking, “Well, I buy the fragrance free variety of dryer sheets, so I should be okay, right?” Wrong. While eliminating the synthetic fragrance factor is a good first step, you’re not doing away with the other compounds that have been proven to be toxic.
So let me break it down for you and perhaps this will ignite a fire in you to toss those dryer sheets once and for all!
Dryer Sheets Are Made of WHAT?
These 12 chemicals are commonly found in dryer sheets and can directly impact your health.
If that doesn’t freak you out, I don’t know what to say! Do I want that in the air I breath or touching my skin? Not so much.
Ready for the kicker?!
The list above does not even include the fragrance chemicals! Gasp! You can only imagine what that list would look like!
Not only is using dryer sheets harming your health and those around you, it’s also harming the quality of your clothes. Think about it. If those chemicals have caustic effects on your body, what are they doing to your fabrics!? You’re wearing down the fibers in your clothes faster than needed.
The great news is that there is a way to eliminate dryer sheets and still get soft, clean smelling clothes. By using wool dryer balls in place of dryer sheets, you’re doing wonders for your health and for the environment.
You can reduce static in the dryer by throwing in a ball of tin foil or attaching a few safety pins to the dryer balls. Next, spray each dryer ball with some vinegar and your favorite essential oil and VOILA! Static free.
