Hey wellness lovers! As the holidays approach, I wanted to share some more of my wellness gift suggestions for you and your loved ones. If you didn’t read my 2018 Wellness Gift Guide, go check it out for my picks!
Now, for the month of December, I will choose items that have holistic healing at their core and showcase them individually. Without further ado, let’s get it started!
Perhaps you’ve visited spas or wellness retreats and noticed a soft, glowing light in the waiting room or treatment room? What is that? A crystal? A rock? Or perhaps you’ve noticed this same light in a doctor’s or therapist’s office?
Better yet, maybe you’ve noticed it decorating a friend’s home? I still don’t get it, what IS that? A glowing statue?
The answer is: It’s a Himalayan salt lamp! Not only do these lamps give off a relaxing ambience with their soft lighting, there is also something so soothing about them that you might not know yet.
Salt lamps are large pieces of pure Himalayan salt with a small light bulb inside to create “the glow”. True Himalayan salt comes from the western side of the Himalayan mountains and in the sea beds.
There are many imitation lamps out there, so do your research if you plan to buy one. Companies like SoWell source pure Himalayan salt for their lamps.
So How Do Salt Lamps Work?
Salt is hygroscopic meaning it attracts water molecules to itself. Placing a lamp in a room will naturally attract moisture in the air. Since water in the air can hold allergens, pollutants, and even bacteria, these irritants will also be attracted to the lamp.
The heated lamp dries out the water vapors leaving these particles attached to the salt lamp. So, as you can imagine, it’s important to wipe down your lamp each week to clean it.
Another benefit of a salt lamp is that it produces negative ions much like sources in nature (waterfalls, oceans, lightening storms, etc). Have you ever experienced the renewed, refreshing scent after a storm? Or have you stood by a waterfall and felt the pureness of the air? It’s amazing! The salt lamp itself doesn’t produce the negative ions, but the heat from the bulb inside creates this effect.
Salt lamps don’t give off as many negative ions as these larger sources, but they do produce them in smaller quantities, especially when used regularly.
Since objects like TVs, microwaves, computers, and vacuum cleaners produce positive ions and can exacerbate problems like allergies, stress, and sleep difficulties, salt lamps are especially important to have around the house. The lamps bind to the positive ions thus neutralizing them and cleansing the air.
So let’s discuss the benefits of Himalayan Salt Lamps and why you might want to use them:
5 Benefits of Himalayan Salt Lamps
1. Improved Air Quality
Due to their hygroscopic properties, they can attract pollutants in the air and neutralize the negative effects (EMFs) of electronics.
2. Provides Soothing Light
This is probably the first thing you’ll notice about a salt lamp. The lighting is so soft and relaxing. Research shows that different colors of light affect the body. Specifically, blue light should be avoided after sunset so it doesn’t interfere with your body’s natural circadian rhythm.
Unfortunately, most of us are exposed to a lot of blue light from our cell phones, televisions, and computers. I am not always good at eliminating blue light at nighttime when I need to get rid of it the most!
Having a salt lamp nearby is very beneficial. Locate one near your bed, computer, digital TV, and wireless modem for starters to harmonize and neutralize all forms of harmful energy throughout your home.
Salt lamps provide a soft glow, usually orange or pink, that resembles that of a campfire or candlelight. SoWell even offers rare grey and white salt lamps in a variety of shapes if you’re looking for something different.
Many people choose to use salt lamps as a night light because it doesn’t negatively impact sleep.
3. Light Therapy
Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a real downer for those of us who are affected by the colder, darker winter months. Our moods become more depressed and our energy levels drop.
Salt lamps are a great tool to help with this! The negative ions may help boost moods and the soft lighting helps destress and relax the body. While I love these lamps, if you really want to benefit from negative ions, get outside in nature! Just sayin’….
4. Feng Shui & Clearing Energy
Salt is excellent at clearing spaces with negative energy and can be used in your home or in work environments. Salt crystals vibrate at a frequency closer to Earth’s magnetic frequency, so they can bring us back into balance. The more healthy, living ionizing objects like plants and salt crystals in your home, the better you may feel.
5. Treats Allergens in the Air
Himalayan salt lamps may remove microscopic dust particles, mold, pet dander, and mildew from the air which is a major plus for anyone who suffers from asthma or allergies. So if you’re looking to cut back on allergy symptoms, you might want to place a few salt lamps around your space!
How to Buy a High Quality Salt Lamp
If you’re interested in buying a salt lamp or other Himalayan salt products, I would recommend SoWell. Their lamps are hand carved by artisans from Pakistan and they are one of the only salt lamp companies that is dedicated to fair trade and sustainability.
If you buy a quality lamp, it should last forever occasionally needing a replacement bulb or cord. Lamps should also specify that they are 100% Himalayan salt. This is important! There are several imitation lamps out there that use lower quality salt. Don’t be duped.
Next, because salt lamps absorb moisture and tend to “cry” or “sweat” in humid spaces, if yours seems to withstand humidity in places near your dishwasher, shower, or in the laundry room, it is most likely not a high quality lamp.
You definitely don’t want your lamp to leak, so you’ll want to buy one that is firmly attached to its base. Try to find a brand that has UL certification for extra safety assurance.
Does Size Matter?
We love this question, don’t we? In the case of a salt lamp, yes, size matters. You’ll want to consider the size of the room you’re hoping to use the lamp in first.
The coverage of a salt lamp is determined by the size of the salt crystal. For an average-sized bedroom, a small lamp should be suitable. Generally speaking, to cleanse the air, you need one pound of salt rock for every 16 square feet of space. If you’d prefer to place more than one lamp in a room, that is totally fine.
Other Salt Therapies to Enjoy
Maybe you already have salt lamps and are interested in exploring other salt therapies. Good news, there are plenty! Here are some other ways to introduce Himalayan salt into your life:
- Salt salves and balms
- Rejuvenating Brightening Peel
- Neti Pots
- Bath salts and soaks
- Kitchen salts for cooking
- Deodorant salt stones
While scientific research seems to be limited on the effects of salt lamps, there are plenty of other salt research studies out there that are very encouraging. On top of that, personal accounts and anecdotal reviews seem to speak volumes.
Salt lamps whether solely for the lighting and ambience they offer or for their health-improving qualities are totally worth it in my opinion. Luckily, they’re inexpensive and could provide some worthwhile benefits to pretty much anyone! The way I see it, salt lamps are an investment in your health.
Tis the season for giving! So give yourself and others a gift of holistic healing! Happy glowing!
